Thin Bike

This was forwarded to me by a neighbor of ours.

Pretty interesting stuff. Three questions:

1. How long would that carbon fiber belt driven drive train last? (Say that ten times fast… I dare you…)

2. How much abuse can that foldable stem take? (If you’ve ever ridden an old or “gently used” folding bike, you know what I mean. One word: Woogidy.)

3. Can those key components be transferred over to an existing bike?

In any case, I think it’s an schweet solution to a pretty clumsy problem.

Carbon fiber and a bmx bike had a baby

I’m not entirely sure what to say about this one. I mean, it’s cool and all… it’s just that… well… it’s weird. I mean really weird.  Like what did I just see wait a second is this really happening why do i feel this way right now weird. Maybe it’s because the music makes me want to shove an ice pick into my ear. Maybe that’s what put it over the edge for me…

Anyhoo… I hope you enjoy this little slice as much as I did. Just make sure you turn the volume all the way down.

2 down, 17 to go…

Thanks to the freakn’ awesome detectives at Precinct 77, we were able to recover these two bikes. It went down like this:

A customer called in and told us he thinks he sees two of our stolen bikes on Craigslist (by the way dude, we owe you a beer). We get on Craigslist, and sure enough, there they are. Two pictures, matching the bikes exactly, for sale for $700. The ad also had pictures of our locks, light, and tubes.

I couldn’t believe my eyes.

Dude also was kind enough to give his cell phone and name in the ad. Yeah… you read that right.

So what do I do? I text him. Tell him I’m interested. He text’s me back with his address and tells me to come by. Yeah… you read that right.

I called the detectives and told him about the ad and the conversation I’d been having. After a little back and forth, they decided to set up a ‘meeting’ with him. And by meeting I mean a bust… a sting… a knock some doors down your fucking arrested ‘meeting’.

This is where it gets kooky: I become point man. There was some other goings ons in the area, so they were short officers. They could only get 2 detectives, two arresting officers, one plain clothes officer, and… well… me.

The plan was to have me knock on the door, stick my foot in when it opened, and have the officers rush in.

It didn’t really work out like that.

We showed up and there was a bike on the porch. Two seconds later, dude rolls up on the other bike saying how he got hungry waiting for us so he had to grab some food.

Shit… how were we going to get in?

So I’m checking over the bikes, saying how awesome they are… blah blah blah… and I ask if he has any lights for the bike. He says yes and opens the door telling us he’ll be right back.

We had him. My foot goes in the door and the cops fly in.

WAAA BAAM.

Things are a bit crazy for a bit… there’s someone else in the house… cops are doing their thing… old dude is on the porch not moving a muscle… everyone is in cuffs.

Unfortunately, he was not the thief we were after. The house didn’t have the rest of the stolen goods, and according to his pre-arrest ramble (which is usually 75% B.S.), he bought these bikes from someone else and was flipping them.

So we were able to recover the bikes and some stolen goods. Dude was also arrested and charged with criminal possession of stolen property (a felony, since everything was worth more than $1000).

All in all, not a bad way to break my police sting cherry.

There are some more details and some more embellishing to be told, for sure. But only for in shop entertainment.

Thanks again to everyone at the 77, the customer that called in the ad, and the customers who were rooting for us.

Stay vigilant, my friends. Let’s finish finding the rest of these bikes. WOO!

New locks are installed

We were robbed last night.

The cops are still investigating, but the story goes like this:

Somehow, the assailants came in through the front door of the building (the entrance to the apartments upstairs) and ripped the lock hinges off the door to the basement. They then proceeded to funnel 20 customer bikes and about $4000 worth of locks, lights, chain lube (?), pedals, and saddles out the front door.

We were working until about midnight last night, so it had to have happened sometime after that. The bar tenders on the block are all asking around to see if anyone saw anything. Unfortunately, no cameras on the block saw anything either.

I want to sincerely apologize to my customers below who lost their bikes in this ordeal. I want you to know that I will do everything I can to make this right with each and every one of you.

Stolen Bike List

We’re currently working with detectives to nab these guys.

We’re also reinforcing all the locks, speaking with some company’s about installing our own camera’s, and spreading the word via internet and phone calls to neighboring shops.

We’ll keep you posted on all the progress.

May god strike this man down as I write this…

Just Riding Along

Ahhhh… Manny Fresh… the name tickles me.

This man has NEVER ONCE showed up to this shop without a 6 pack of something in his hand. Without fail, he will walk through that door with something tucked under his arm. It’s gotten to the point where our ears perk up and a warm glow washes over our faces when he walks in. We’re like puppy dogs who’ve been home all day and their master has just walked in.

This time around, along with some icy cold beverages, he had DVD. On that DVD was a little project that he had been working on with a friend of his. Together, they created a nice piece of film that captures a few brief moments here at BByB.

Folks, may I present to you, the very first BByB documentary.
